Our Addiction to Mental Assumption

A person standing with their back to the camera, looking at a large frame displaying a bright sky with clouds, alongside a staircase leading upwards within the frame.

It used to be said, long ago, that the eyes are the windows into the human soul. Well, I apologize for that old cliche here and now. The real window into the human soul is our capacity for Mental Assumption.

So, just what is ‘Mental Assumption’ and how are we addicted to such a thing?

Listen to yourself. Under any topic, when discussing our society or any faucet of it, have you ever started a reply or a comment with “People can…” and whatever the subject was about infects this statement?

An example is in order. Once, in 1988, with my older sister’s boyfriend, who was selling vegetables and fruits by the side of the road, I commented on how expensive his items are. His reply? His actual Mental Assumption? “People can afford it.”

In his mind, he assumes that everyone has the money to buy his stuff. It’s their fault if they pass up his products for other sources. They can all afford it. That was his Mental Assumption, and he was truly addicted to it. Even a decade later, through recessions, money problems of his own, supply and demand issues, he will still firmly state, as if it was no big deal, “People can afford it.”

People can find another job. People can vote for whoever they want. People can go to school for a new career. People can be wonderful when they want to be. People can be happy with what they have. People can be idiots. People can go to Hell.

Any of that familiar from your own mouth? No? Just remember, the next time you utter, in contempt or even in pure happiness, “People can…” and whatever you follow it up with is pure Mental Assumption.

We are all not just guilty, but as described, we are all addicted to saying it.

Even me.

This post is not about blame. Or self improvement. It’s about recognition, and until we recognize this growing evil issue within ourselves, there’s no hope in defeating such a thing.

Remember that, and we will have started on a proper path to being a better person.
